Hockey Academy

hockey-academy-logos.e2fd758521.pngCelebrating over 17 years of operation, École St-Malo School continues to offer the HCSA (Hockey Canada Skills Academy) program!  Program registrations are consistently between 35 and 50 students every year. This year, students and staff are excited to skate in the newly renovated St-Malo Arena!!! Any student in grades 5-8, regardless of experience, is more than welcome to participate!  We enjoy working with students who are just discovering the game of hockey as much as those students playing high-level hockey. We have consistently maintained an atmosphere of encouragement and positivity within the program.

The HCSA is an opportunity for students to challenge themselves and enjoy the sport they love while tending to their physical health as well as their mental well-being.  It is a motivational hook for learning, helping students find a sense of belonging and also gain self-confidence. The program continues to prove itself as very successful and enjoyable for our student-athletes.

Currently, the HCSA is offered as a physical education option.  Student-athletes will participate in the program twice per week for the entire school year.  The groupings are formed as follows: one group of grade ⅚ students and a second group of grade ⅞ students.  The grades 5 & 6 group participates on Tuesdays and Thursdays, while the 7&8’s will participate on Mondays and Wednesdays.  While the focus is on hockey during the winter on-ice sessions, the preseason and postseason months are used to practice a variety of exercises, workouts, games and sports.  This goes hand-in-hand with the LTAD (Long-Term Athlete Development)  model supported by Hockey Canada.

Mr. Jared Magne is the Head Instructor. Jared is a teacher at ÉSMS with a physical education background. He has playing experience at the AAA and Junior levels and currently plays in the highly competitive SEMHL intermediate men’s league for the Red River Wild. Mr. Magne also brings along experience in hockey skills development, having worked with GT Performance for many years previous to his new role. The program has been extremely fortunate to have gathered numerous highly qualified volunteers, namely Jason Remillard, Art Coulombe and Dan Carrière, to help instruct our student-athletes during on-ice sessions.  As much as possible, we also hire or bring in special coaches for goaltending instruction. Roger Storoschuk, from Gameday Goaltending, is involved in developing our goaltenders as much as possible.

Because of community support, the program has been able to offer a very reasonable fee of $390 for the year per student.  This fee covers the ice time as well as Hockey Canada fees and any equipment needing to be purchased for the program.  We strive to keep the fees very reasonable for parents; however, they are subject to change.
